Why Honesty is the best policy?

In a small village long ago, there lived a boy who loved books. His family was poor, and he had to work hard every day. But no matter how tired he was, he always found time to read. One day, he heard that a farmer nearby had a book about a great leader. Excited, he walked miles to borrow it. As he walked home, he eagerly flipped through the pages.

That night, he placed the book in a safe spot near his window. But when a storm came, rainwater seeped in, soaking the book. The next morning, he saw the damaged book and felt terrible.

What do you think he did next?

Instead of hiding it, he went back to the farmer and told the truth. Since he had no money to pay for the damage, he offered to work on the farm. For three days, he worked hard, and in return, the farmer let him keep the book. He read it over and over, learning valuable lessons from its pages.

Years later, as a young man, he worked at a small store. One evening, after counting the money, he realized he had charged a customer a little too much. It was only a few cents, but he knew it wasn’t right. Even though it was late, he walked miles to return the extra money.

Why do you think he did that?

Another time, he realized he had given a woman less tea than she paid for. Instead of waiting, he walked to her house the next morning to give her the missing tea.

People in his town noticed his honesty and started calling him a special name—one that stayed with him all his life.

As he grew older, he became a lawyer. He often helped people who could not afford to pay.

Once, he found out that a poor old widow had been unfairly charged a large fee. He fought for her in court and won, making sure she got her money back. Not only did he refuse to take any payment for his work, but he also gave her money to travel back home.

What would the world be like if more people were this honest and kind?

His honesty and fairness made him a great leader, and people trusted him deeply.

In time, he became the leader of his country, guiding it through one of the most difficult times in history.

And now, can you guess who this honest man was? It was the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln! He became known as ‘Honest Abe’ because he always chose to do what was right, no matter how small or big the situation. His honesty and kindness inspired many people, and even today, he is remembered as one of the greatest leaders in history.
